See the social board for the Dufton sleepover weekend.

High Cup Nick is England’s very own Grand Canyon, situated way up the Pennines.

Imagine a giant empty bath tub, 200m deep, 2.5 miles long, 0.5 miles wide, carved out of the landscape by the last Ice Age and then carpeted with green grass.

The rim is encrusted with bizarre rock features that were formed 295 million years ago. Tectonic plate movement in the earth’s crust squeezed volcanic lava between the limestone seams. On cooling, this crystallized into blue-grey dolerite which is more resistant to erosion than the limestone that has long since worn away. The result is a belt of geological formations that are so interesting that they were the first to be designated as a UNESCO European Geopark.

On a rare clear day, when the mist has lifted, you can look due West straight down the rugged canyon, along the silver stream meandering across the chasm floor, then out towards the sprawling Cumberland farmland to see the sun setting over the entire range of The Lakeland summits – one of the most stunning views Britain has to offer.

But it gets better …

To the North you can see the Howgills including Cross Fell, England’s highest peak outside the Lake District.

And to the East is Teesdale including Cautley Spout, England’s biggest waterfall.

And to the South our beloved Yorkshire Dales.

This will be an Intermediate walk but at a gentle pace with lots of photo and rest stops.

It will be hot, so bring at least 1.5L of fluid to drink.

By all means wear shorts and suncream, but please also pack a waterproof jacket and trousers. This area is a remote wilderness, and the heaviest thundery rain and hail downpours unexpectedly occur in July.
