The countryside is still open!
Rambler Central has asked me to reassure all TaH members that despite the Foot and Mouth outbreak in Surrey, the countryside remains open and there is no need for walks to be cancelled. DEFRA is very specific on this point:
"Despite the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) on a farm in Surrey, the countryside remains open. There is no need for people to stop visiting the countryside and, at the present time, the only impacts on visitor attractions are those which result from the restrictions on animal movements and animal gatherings". (http://www.defra.gov.uk/footandmouth/rural/index.htm, accessed 9/8/07)
Obviously, if you are visiting the area of the outbreak some paths will be closed and you should follow local instructions re closures, disinfectant etc. If you find any unofficial notices, path closures or restrictions in other areas, please notify the relevant highway authority and Ramblers head office (via me if it's easier) so that Ramblers can monitor incidents and ensure continuing access to the countryside.
