Your Walking Group Needs You...

...at the Take a Hike AGM.

This year's Annual General Meeting is to be held at 3pm on Saturday December 2nd. The location is Bridget's bar at the Victoria Hotel on Great George St., LS1 3BB (just behind Leeds Town Hall - see a map here). The AGM is an important event in the TaH calendar: it's your best chance to put your opinions to the committee and indeed to vote us out if you wish, so come along and be heard: it's your group.

As if the prospect of democracy in action wasn't enough for you, this year we're organising a social around the AGM: see the social diary for details, but basically it involves food and beer, both of which have proved popular with TaH members in the past. For the hardier souls, we'll be starting at 11am with brunch - for those who need to do Christmas shopping first, we'll be going on after the AGM for more pubs and some food.

Hope to see you there!

Is there any hope of online voting for candidates?

that'd only work if there were online hustings.

personally i reckon if people are prepared to dedicate a year to sorting out activities for TAH members the least we can do is spend a few hours in the pub taking an interest in what they've got to say.

Unfortunately in practice no. Before voting takes place, there needs to be an opportunity for everyone to hear who the various candidates are and what they are offering to bring to the committee roles. The simplest method of doing this is for candidates to present at the AGM, any other method would involve complex coordination and circulation of candidate details to all Take a Hike members which there just isn’t time to do. For the same reason proxy voting can’t be done – you won’t know who you can vote for and why you should vote for them without turning up to the AGM. However if anyone wants to stand for a committee position but can’t attend the AGM, we can make arrangements for their name to be included. Please contact Tim, the Take a Hike Treasurer to discuss.

So despite the hi-tec website etc, it is still down to people spending a Saturday afternoon in the dismal Victoria Hotel instead of out on the hills or Xmas shopping. What if people have made up their minds who to vote for before the event, but cannot attend because they are working or away? Surely a postal voting system could be worked out, either email or other methods.
We should have some form of democracy rather than the done-deal of so many times in the past!

Not sure what you mean by 'done deal'. In the past we've struggled to fill all the posts. In the last three years we've only ever had 2 situations where we've need to have a vote.

I think this is a splendid opportunity for those who feel that they can enhance the operation of the group to come forward and assemble the resources and expertise necessary to put together a truly democractic web based voting solution.

They could do this without needing to add further burden to a webmaster that's already wholly re-vamped the web site as well as attended inumerable meetings.

Alternatively, they could just turn up at an AGM that someone has already gone to the trouble of organising, have their say, listen to what others have to say, and vote.

I dunno, some people eh?

There is a danger that the committee maybe deemed as being out of touch with the membership. Many members have expressed dismay at the lack of transparency in the voting process.
Why not have the AGM on the same night and venue of a Pub meet?

A feeling of "jobs for the boys" has been evident in the past. This has been alleviated by the election of 2 excellent female members last year and a change in webmaster has changed the "automatic right" to this post. Most welcome and now can we move forward into the 21st Century with the rest of committee processes?
